I just failed my motility test, my lower esophogus just isn't working the way it should. My Nissen surgery has been canceled and the surgeon has placed me on Regland, 4 times a day, in the hopes that this will strengthen my muscles. Any and all information will help.
Thanks
Rob
Hey Rob...Reglan (metoclopromide) is a motility drug that helps speed up the movement of food through your system. The drug also helps prevent nausea. Normally it is prescribed one half hour before meals and at bedtime. I used it for about a year only at bedtime with no problems, but be aware, some people have bad side effects. Check out Reglan on the web and take note of the side effects and contact your doctor if you get any.

I can honestly say that Reglan was the only medication that help me with the reflux, but the only down side for me was that it made me soooooooooooooooooooooooo sleepy. I only took it for a month and then had the fundo surgery.
adios,

Well, the Regland seems to be cutting down on the heartburn durring the day quite a bit, and I am getting through about 3/4 of the night before waking up due to heartburn but the other side effects of the medication are pretty miserable. Maybe I am just a little odd but it does NOT seem to make me drowsy but it does make me bloated, hungry ALL THE TIME, and tearable gass pains. I look like I am about 7 months preagnant :-)
If you all remember I failed my motility test on the 13th, had my nissan surgery canceled :-( well, I performed my own test since I was told that my esophogus was hardly contracting at all. I hung over my bed, at a 45 degree angle, head down, drank 2 cups of water through a straw, without any problems. Test #2, drank two cups of warm/hot tea in the same way so I could feel the liquid being pumped into my stomach, no problem. Test #3, same set up but ate a slice of whole wheat bread, no water just the bread, no problem swallowing, felt like it went right down, which in this case was up since I was at a 45 degree angle.
So, do I have a problem or did they forget to plug something in? Can other medications effect the test. At the time of the test I was taking eye drops for Glaucoma and Topamax for Migraines.
Thanks
Patrick

Rob,
I have been on Reglan for a few years. It was maybe a year before I started to get the sleepy side effect, and after that I cut back to half the daily dose (two 10mg pills), taken at bedtime. I never got the bloated or hungry side effects, though, sorry that you're experiencing that.
I had the same problem with waking up in the middle of the night. I found that gulping down a big dose of pepto or mylanta seemed to solve the problem, and I suspect that Gaviscon would too (based on what others here have said).
I've never heard of a motility test like that... eating/drinking upside down. In my case, they had me eat some mildly radioactive food and then tracked it through my digestive system...easy. Your test sounds kind of rough!
