PPIs worked fine for awhile but now I am getting stomach pain and diarrhea. H2 blockers don't cause these problems. What should I do? Should I take fiber supplements? PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks!!

Bob fiber supplements will make you go more. You need to change PPIs. Magnesium based PPIS cause diahreaha, where aluminum based meds tend to cause constipation. Don't know what PPI you are on but Nexium, although i found it most effective, gave me diahreaha and stomach pain ,-- it's magnesium based. Prevacid didn't
Also some say profound acid suppresion can ( usually high doses ) cause a bacterial overload thus causing diahreaha-- since acid is needed to kill bacteria-- and the ppis elimates most of the acid. Some take probiotics .
However i think the reason for your symptoms is most probably due to the fact that your PPI is magnesium based. Try a different one. I never met a PPI that didn't give me side effects. You have to keep switching up until you find the one you can most tolerate and works the best. Good luck

I am taking 20mg of prilosec. But, this has happened with nexium, axid, and prevacid. Is there something to help with the stomach so that i can take ppis? Thanks.

Take a tablespoon of linseeds a day with a glass of water. This will regulate the passage of food through the gut. Also take a probiotic supplement such as acidophilus to replace the good bacteria in your stomach.

You have 2 other ppis yet to try, aciphex and protonix . One of them might not affect you that way.

Thanks so much for all the info on this site. TU) I too have diarrhea with all PPI's I've tried. Never heard of Protonix (is there another name for it here in the States?). Also, what are the H2's? Are there any PPI's without magnesium that I could try to rule out magnesium as a cause? As the diarrhea seems to worsen with the duration of each PPI I've tried, I'm wondering if the probiotic treatment might help.
Also, what are the H2's? .
H2's are hystamine blockers that slow the production of acid. Zantac (Ranitidine) and Pepsid are 2 of the common H2's. TU)

H Julie,
The Generic Name for Protonix is Pantoprazole. TU)
The Generic for Aciphex is Rabeprazole. TU)
H2 stands for Hystamine 2 Blockers!! :D
Anything Else?? Just Ask!! :D

Tom
