Hi everyone, is there any one with Barrett's and Osteoporosis too? My osteopenia has now progressed to osteoporosis. One doctor prescribes Actonol, but I think I better ask my gerd doctor about taking this(can't see him for another months). I heard this med is hard on the digestive system. Any one with this concern due to Barrett's?
Hi lindee,
Luckily, I don't have osteoporosis or osteopenia but I have worried about the medications available if I need them in the future. Yes, many of the drugs are GERD non-friendly. In fact when they are taken you shouldn't lie down for at least 30 minutes. The one good thing is that some of them now come in a once a week dose. That's probably what I'd be looking into. Other options are hormone related drugs (for example Evista(raloxifene)) or nasal sprays (calcitonin). But neither raloxifene or calcitonin seem to offer protection in the hip. Another option that will be available at some time in the near future is recombinant parathyroid hormone.

Boy you sure have more than your share of bad luck. I agree I wouldnt take anything until you talk to your gerd dr. I hope everything works out for you. My mom just found out she to has it. She is taking fosamax and she had gerd systoms as well. So far no gerd issues from the medication directly. They did put her on the once a week because of the gerd. They also told her to take a calicum supplement with it and to eat more calicum rich foods.
