I hear all kinds of talk about antibiotics killing the "friendly" bacteria and that we should take acidopholis to reintroduce the "friendly" bacteria. Has anyone had any success taking these supplements, or is it just some kind of marketing ploy??? Thanks!!!

Acidophilus is the real deal. I've been taking probiotics called Multidophilus (acidophilus combined with a couple other types of bacteria) for years, and they have definitely helped me. It takes a while before you'll notice an improvement, but it's worth getting a bottle and trying it for a month or so.

Thanks. I just started it 2 days ago and I guess I was expecting something to improve quickly. I'll definitely give it a month!
Thanks again
Hey Mary's Mag,
Hello, nice to meet you! I've been a big fan of probiotics for a long time now and I have a couple of things to add to your shopping list.
Have you tried drinking a liquified yogurt product called KefirŪ ? It's simply a tastebud party! Buttermilk and regular yogurt should be on the list as well if not already. Ymmmm, now I'm hungry! :p

Yep, the formulation that I take is supposed to be taken three times a day, and I take mine with meals. If I bring a sandwich to work for lunch, I usually throw a capsule in the baggie, to keep my dosage up. (I would keep a bottle in the fridge at work, but I'd rather not advertise my condition). That's the only incovenient thing about probiotics, is that they need to be kept refrigerated.

I have always kept this in my fridge so it is here for those times when I have to take an antibiotic to try and avoid yeast problems. My question is - how does it help with GERD? When you say that it works well for you what does that mean? And should I just buy some to take daily?
Thanks much... :)

Hi All,
The main thing to remember about probiotics is to
take them about two hours before or after taking the antibiotic to allow them to not interfere with eachother and to allow them to have a chance to
reach the gut.
One of the best probiotics actually has been patented because two researchers finally isolated
a bacteria that makes it through the digestive system and takes up residence in the colon where it is needed. Most probiotics are out of your system a few days at most after you stop taking them. The patented one is "lactobacillus GG"
which is in Culturelle and very few others.
Read the label.

I have been using a product called "DAIRY CARE" for about 2 months now. It is a combo of acidopholis as well as lactaid because I am also (surprise, surpirse) lactose intolerant.
I take 2 per day each morning and I think I will try and lower to 1 per day.
It has helped. I have less "gas" and gas pains which seems to be my main symptom which I believe is in part due to GERD and in part due to lactose intolerance.
I still have occassional GERD, but I think the lactose part is getting better.
