I haven't really been checking things lately, but I figured some of the people with Barrett's might have had some special procedures. I know I was reading about some successful photo ablation therepy at the Mayo Clinic where I am going (just for a check up, not for Barretts). Anyone here know of or are taking part in such a thing?
Also, I recently read an article that was commenting on COX inhibitors (aspirin being one of them), and they were essentially saying that they are pressing for early diagnosis of things like Barrett's simply because they feel that it is no different than being predisposed to heart disease. In other words, there are a key 20-30 years from onset to when problems occur, and just like with heart disease, it is how you treat those years that will ultimately affect what happens. They have found that baby aspirins have a significant affect on both colon cancer and adenocarcinoma due to Barrett's. Of course, they were saying this is no medical breakthrough, and one would have to take baby aspirin for 10 years to see any significant reduction in risk. But again, the jist of the article was positive, and indicative of a lifelong treatable disease like heart disease, stroke, etc.
Incidentally, I also happened to stumble across a generic article on MSN from leading cancer researchers, who claimed that an astonishing 30% of all cancer could be avoided if people just ate better, stopping smoking, limited achohol intake, and exercising regularly.
