View Full Version : PPI's and weight gain
Has anyone had experience with PPI's and weight gain? My doc put me back on a test of PPI's and it seems like in the week I have been on them, I have become much more "padded".
I'm also having back pain, and liquid bowel movements (lovely)
I was on the drugs for so long that I forgot what it is like to ramp up on them.
Now I am remembering why I opted for surgery. Twice.

Colon inflammation can be associated with back pain, so those two could be from the same cause.
I had pretty loose BM's when on PPI's. You may get a tolerance for that over some time. (or not)
I have had some weight gain, however I was also put on tri-cyclic anti-depressant, which is also associatd with weight gain, so I'm no guage of weight gain and associated causes.

Off topic, but I just thought I would mention that I envy you in a certain respect. I understand you are a nurse, and so is my mother (retired pediatric nurse of 30 years).
The cool thing about the nurse/doctor thing is that you are in the medical field, are knowledgeable about it, and therefore have a rather firm hold on statistical reality when it comes to medical issues. My mother is very much like that (although scared to death of other things that I think are silly). Medical situations don't phase her one bit. She was at the hospital once getting checked for a cardiac problem, and the doctor told her she was lucky because she had major blockage that needed to be rectified ASAP (i.e. now). She was like, fine, she shacked up at the hospital and the next day had quadruple bypass surgery (she was seriously all gung-ho, super excited that they had found it before old age). I would have been a hysterical wreck, and would have needed a month just to absorb the news. I am seriously going to freak if I find out I have Barrett's next month, but if my mom found out she had it, she would be like, ehh, so what....low risk of cancer still, what's for dinner?
Really the only thing I can find analagous to that sort of situation is my relationship with the ocean, I live approx. 20 miles from the beach, and spent my entire highschool life and much of my college life surfing. I see sharks CONSTANTLY, and most people would freak if they really knew how often sharks were off the coast. Occasionally someone would get bit, and I would come in for about an hour, then go back out. No one (i.e. my girlfriend, visiting relatives from out of state) could comprehend my attitude, but I was not alone (tons of surfers were out there). I simply felt comfortable in the ocean, I knew the ocean, I saw the sharks, I rode waves with them occasionally. Sharks are part of the ocean, and I understand the absolute low risk of a shark attack. I can avoid sharks by never going in the water, but then I never get to experience all the fun I've had.
Why can't I have the same damn attitude about medical stuff? I'm a Grade A WUSSY!

I have been on Prevacid for approx 3 years now and have gained weight slowly over those past 3 years. I never before had a problem with my weight and now no matter how much I starve or exercise I continue to gain 5-10 pounds a year. I mentioned this to the doctor and he said he didn't know if that was a side effect or not. I did read somewhere that it does depleat your vitamin B so I decided to take a vitamin B complex (high potency). This has helped somewhat I did lose about 5 pounds and have a little more energy.
Also as a test for myself I went off the prevacid for 2 weeks and lived on tums and in 1 week I lost 10 pounds. Can't say for sure if it is the prevacid or not but I believe it does make me gain weight and I know it definitely makes me bloat.
