Upright reflux and burping

Anyone have upright reflux and constant burping as their main problem? Any success in treating this? The only time I feel normal is when I lie down which seems to be the opposite of everyone else. Currently taking nexium. Am considering xanax since I read that Halsy had burping as a symptom?

Thanks

Hi guys...I'm like you as well....

I have the least amount of pain in my throat and my chest when I lying down. In fact, when I sleep, I feel no pain whatsoever.

When I first met with my surgeon (after all my tests had been run), he saw how many times I refluxed (251 in 24 hours, phenomenal!) while sitting up and told me, "Robin, you would definitely NOT be one of the patients I tell to raise their bed!"

I knew I wasn't crazy, but everyone kepte telling me to do all these things!

At any rate, I have never burped as much as I have in the last six months in my entire life! It's been amazing...what's up with all the belching!?

I just hope that my fundo helps all the areas that I'm having issues with!

Robinbird

ps...I am on 160 mg of Protonix daily, and it is starting to help my chest pains a bit, but not my globus...still there, FULL FORCE

I feel your pain...

I too took the Nexium, as well as Prilosec, and Aciphex and am currently taking 40 mg of Protonix four times a day until I have surgery on 3/12.

I had all normal endoscopy and manometry, but had a very bad ph study...I had the double probe, because with LPR you have to have both channels reading the acid levels in your upper esophageal as well as lower esophageal sphincter monitored.

Mine was unbelieveable...which basically means that the meds won't help at all, but they are helping with the chest pains (feels like two bowlig balls on my chest, the pressure is horrible!).

Anway, I've been to 16 docs and even went to the Mayo clinic, to no avail. Finally, I've opted for the surgery, I'm very hopeful that it will help!

Burping too !!!

Well it looks like there are more people here with this problem now besides Pete and I.
Does anyone think that the PPI's could cause the burping? I wish I knew but can't stay off long enough because of the pain without it.
The only time I don't burp is when I am talking and it has been almost 2 years now. Just went on Celexa. Too soon to know if it helps.
I will be praying for all of us.

Celexa is the "ladies version" of prozac. (same generic medicine, different name).
I have read that they changed the name so that people would not feel stigmatized from taking it.

Robin,

Did I read that you felt better with Sudafed? Did this help the burping?

Thanks.

I too had the nissen but it only lasted a few months. I believe it failed because I started working out with heavy weights right after surgery. The operation is not a big deal. I may have it again. I would consider Hinder at Mayo. I have read that he is the most skilled in the US.

Pete...forgive me please...

don't use Hinder...he is not the most skilled...I was sooooooooooo disappointed in him...after I'd heard many things about him and his being with Mayo, I thought he must be wonderful...he didn't have 1/2 the info that my surgeon at USF has...and he wasn't commited to annnnnnnything...I'd ask a question and he'd stutter and say, "ummmmm, well, possibly!" He really was of no help to me whatsoever, other than being a second opinion.

Also, if you aren't sure, then do a search on this site with respect to hinder, and you'll see all the negative posts...that aside, I was seeing my surgeon at USF for the first time and the lady in the waiting room anticipating seeing my surgeon was sent to my surgeon BY HINDER! That to me speaks for itself...

I can't go on enough about HInder, I wish I wouldn't have wasted my 4 hours driving to Jacksonville to see him, it was totally useless.

Not only that, he claims to have pioneered the fundo, NOT! He didn't and when or if you ever speak to him, you'll see what I mean...doesn't know that much about stuff!

Sudafed helps with the mucous, but that's about it...sorry!

Pete,

Back in the days when excessive burping was a problem for me, laying down either on my back or on my right side would stop the burping and ease the nausea. But then there were times when so much pressure would build up, that I had to get up and walk around in the house to allow belching to relieve the pressure.

I always believed that my small hiatal hernia was what brought about the burping - the hernia maybe weakened the LES and laying down caused the weight of the fat around my waist to shift and increase pressure to close the LES. But then, something had to be causing all of the gas to form in the first place.

I was taking a PPI at that time. Maybe there was too little stomach acid to properly digest the food, motility was slowed down and the food was spoiling and giving off gas. Who knows.

Robin,

I did speak with Hinder. I talked with him on the phone and did like him. I think he just can't say with certainty that "i'm going to fix you". He actually asked me if he should do it laproscopic or open. I kind of respected him for telling it how it is. No one can know for sure that they will cure you. My surgeon was Barry Salky who is very highly regarded. I liked him and feel comfortable with him. I may go back to him if I do it again. Salky told me he would redo it or if I wanted to see someone else, that Hinder is the best of the best. You have to feel comfortable though. I wish you luck.

Hallsy,

I have wondered if the PPI could be causing the burping. I can't seem to get off though.

Thanks,

Pete

PPI's and Burping

Hallsy,
do you mean that the PPI's can be causing our burping? Are you off of them now? What did you do?
Thanks,
Sandi

Sandi,

When I was taking PPIs, they didn't cause any burping problems with me. I had excessive burping before starting on Protonix, it worked for nine months and then symptoms - including excessive burping returned.

My sister-in-law's husband was started on Prevacid and immediately begin producing some earth shaking belches every few minutes for 2 or 3 hours after eating. So I would say it is possible for PPIs to cause burping.

I no longer take any PPIs. I am currently taking Alprazolam (generic Xanax).

Pete,
I too experience constant burping. I am presently taking Prevacid, and have been on it for the last four years. I also have a hiatal hernia and frequently experience post nasal drip. I have read that people with hiatal hernias and with nasal drip are air swallowers and thus burp a lot. I can burp on command! I also experience a lot of pressure and all this is driving me crazy! I have tried products with simethicone, but they don't work for me. Does anyone out there have any other suggestions to relieve the burping?
