  • gurgling throat noises?

For about as long as I can remember, I have been feeling and hearing air escaping through my throat, mainly after a meal. I'm guessing that it's simply a form of aerophagia, but it's driving me crazy! I can't control it, and sometimes it goes on for hours. I don't have any stomach or chest pain, and don't really feel any heartburn usually. This symptom seems to take the place of burping - I can't burp! Does anyone know what that is or what I can do about it?
    Thanks!

    Re: gurgling sounds

I've got the same problem but have no clue what causes it. My guess is it has something to do with the LES being dysfunctional since we can't burp (I literally burp maybe twice a year by accident). Besides after eating, does the noise kick into gear when you are nervous or anxious? Sometimes I get a little irritated from it just below my Adam's apple. The only difference with me is that I do have heartburn and have to take meds to control it. Be thankful you don't have that on top of the gurgling (which some of my friends call The Predator..lol). Take care.

Come to think of it, it does kick into high gear when I'm nervous... it makes going on dates a little awkward!!! Have you asked any specialists about it? I am thinking of asking a gastroenterologist, but don't want to bother if no one will know what it is or how to stop it!!!
The Predator - that's funny!!! My friends usually think it's my stomach growling, and they think I'm a pig because it happens when I've just eaten a lot!! ("you're STILL hungry???")

I did ask my gastroenterologist and he claims it's just air moving up the esophagus which is really no revelation. He didn't add much more than that so I guess it's just something we have to live with. I'm on Aciphex for the heartburn but it doesn't control The Predator. When he wants to roar, there's no stopping him

The same thing happens to me. I almost never burp, and can't make myself burp, but after a meal - and especially after drinking a lot of water - I get those same throat gurgling noises. Very strange. It seems to have become more frequent since the whole GERD thing started up...

Welcome to the club Robert. As KB posted, it makes for a very interesting and annoying dating experience when the noise rears its ugly head. I remember it used to happen often when I would kiss this certain ex-girlfriend of mine. She didn't seem to mind but I would have to stop as it was really embarrasing. Guess I'll just have to find a girl with the same problem so we can make beautiful music together

I've had the same thing... only rarely and after large meals though. I'm not a burper either; it's maybe 2 or 3 times a year I'll be able to burp.

Anyway the noises really only bother me when I'm trying to get to sleep. I've found holding my breath for a while seems to make it go away (kind of like holding your breath to get rid of hiccups).
