Depends
Hi Domingo, I am 4 weeks out. Which surgery did you have? I have been having bouts of heart-burn like sensations, but antacids and water don't have any effect at all. The bouts tend to vanish on their own, so I suspect that while they feel like reflux, they aren't. Have you tried using a mild magnesium chew or something similar to see if it erases the feeling, even for a short time?

it just feels like acid is hitting a new or different part of esophagus and or in a different kind of way , hard to explain

Sigh, there is just no winning this war...

Maybe that is it exactly. The stomach producing so much acid that even without reflux, it is irritating the stomach lining. By the way, I found it very effective when coming off of PPIs to take H2 blockers (like Zantac) for a week or so during the rebound period. It gives you a chance to let down easily on the acid, while still removing the PPI addiction.

Post-op swelling mimics reflux exactly, and that's likely what is going on. You can have this for months. Mine lasted nearly a year. Or, you might have food allergies, or something else. I doubt that your surgery has failed, IF you did due diligence ahead of time and made sure you had good assessment and diagnosis and a surgeon who knew what he/she was doing.
Hang in there!

Thanks Thistle, the reassurance is good. Yeah, it is a weird kind of pain, like the pain you get from reflux, but without the burning. I had the best surgeon, so no issue there. I have been doing my very best on the soft foods thing. Did you discover triggers? Or just random episodes?

Hello everyone,
Well, I had my Nissen on May 14th so I am almost 2 weeks out. The surgery went really well but I did develop a high fever of 104.7 while I was in the hospital recovering. Other than that, everything has gone fine, just trying to adjust to this new diet. Question for anyone else who has had the Nissen, I have completely lost my gag reflex. Prior to having the Nissen, I couldn't even brush the back of my tongue without gagging, now, I can literally stick my finger down the back of my throat without the slightest gag. I had my first follow up visit today and I told my surgeon that, but he didn't seem concerned? He said that he wished he didn't have a gag reflex. I have been doing research and I haven't seen anywhere where a loss of gag reflex is a possible side effect of a Nissen. Initially I though, well, if you can't vomit than you probably can't gag either, but I am not seeing that correlation anywhere.
Any input?
