Well its been 8 weeks now since surgery and no daily (80mgs Pantoprazole) , and sad to say i think the reflux is starting to creep up again into my throat . Been some strange sensations over these last 8 weeks. i was hoping these latest Sensations were par for course but this latest one has been sticking around more and more and i noticed this afternoon a sour taste in my mouth , i will be very dissapointed if this surgery was a waiste of time , as it knocked me for six Recovery wise

    Depends

Hi Domingo, I am 4 weeks out. Which surgery did you have? I have been having bouts of heart-burn like sensations, but antacids and water don't have any effect at all. The bouts tend to vanish on their own, so I suspect that while they feel like reflux, they aren't. Have you tried using a mild magnesium chew or something similar to see if it erases the feeling, even for a short time?

Hi acidstrom ,i had Heital hernia repair and Nissen (2 for 1 as the doc called it) in reply to your question No i have not took any antacids as if these sensations go after taking then i know my heart will sink and i then know im back to square one , and im just not ready for that disappointment So soon after surgery , (i dont see the doc for another 4 months either) So im Praying its like what u have said about it not being reflux. it just feels like acid is hitting a new or different part of esophagus and or in a different kind of way , hard to explain i have been belching lots , and i heard that was not so much the case after a nissen if anything mines exactly the same or even worse , lots of wind both ends. with the upper belching thats why im also thinking the dreaded acid is ready to let loose all over again

Yes, that is the same sensation I am having. It is like heartburn but in some new way. I discovered last night that eating some non-acidic food reduces the sensation a lot, so I suspect it is some form of heartburn, or perhaps just very high acid in the stomach. Sigh, there is just no winning this war...

Maybe its after eating when the wrap is opening to allow food in is when the acid is escaping , yesterday my stomach felt so hot inside like a acid rage if possible, ive been taking maximum doses of pantoprozole for years and now suddenly stopped, so my body/ stomach/ bile or whatever must be wondering what the hell happend. i have some type of reflux pain at the moment actually. Nothin Crazy pain like it used to get like if never had meds, but acid or acidic wind even is hitting something somwere thats for sure. GRrrr

Maybe that is it exactly. The stomach producing so much acid that even without reflux, it is irritating the stomach lining. By the way, I found it very effective when coming off of PPIs to take H2 blockers (like Zantac) for a week or so during the rebound period. It gives you a chance to let down easily on the acid, while still removing the PPI addiction.

Zantacs , i used to pop them like MnM`s , i think its just a case of keeping a eye on things and making notes of times and foods etc , like today i aint eaten yet , just had warm a cup of tea, and now have this acid feeling is back again. (morning upon waking seems more this case) , maybe like u have said eating non acid foods will ease this , as that has happend with me also

Post-op swelling mimics reflux exactly, and that's likely what is going on. You can have this for months. Mine lasted nearly a year. Or, you might have food allergies, or something else. I doubt that your surgery has failed, IF you did due diligence ahead of time and made sure you had good assessment and diagnosis and a surgeon who knew what he/she was doing.

                Hang in there!

Thanks Thistle, the reassurance is good. Yeah, it is a weird kind of pain, like the pain you get from reflux, but without the burning. I had the best surgeon, so no issue there. I have been doing my very best on the soft foods thing. Did you discover triggers? Or just random episodes?

                    Hello everyone,

Well, I had my Nissen on May 14th so I am almost 2 weeks out. The surgery went really well but I did develop a high fever of 104.7 while I was in the hospital recovering. Other than that, everything has gone fine, just trying to adjust to this new diet. Question for anyone else who has had the Nissen, I have completely lost my gag reflex. Prior to having the Nissen, I couldn't even brush the back of my tongue without gagging, now, I can literally stick my finger down the back of my throat without the slightest gag. I had my first follow up visit today and I told my surgeon that, but he didn't seem concerned? He said that he wished he didn't have a gag reflex. I have been doing research and I haven't seen anywhere where a loss of gag reflex is a possible side effect of a Nissen. Initially I though, well, if you can't vomit than you probably can't gag either, but I am not seeing that correlation anywhere.

                    Any input?

I'm not sure either of you check your emails anymore but I'd love to hear a follow up from both of you on your recovery as I'm having similar symptoms and had my surgery 7 weeks ago
